Montgomery Township schools report 2425 Period 2 SSDS data: substances top incidents; 142 investigations, 11 affirmed

Superintendent Mary McLaughlin reported to the Montgomery Township Board of Education on the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) period 2 submission for the 20242025 school year, covering January through June 2025.
The report identifies incidents the state tracks as violence, vandalism, substances, weapons and HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying). McLaughlin said Montgomery High School had 21 incidents during the period, with the majority in the substances category; Upper Middle School reported 31 incidents, “with most incidents falling in the category of HIB,” and Lower Middle School reported 24 incidents across HIB confirmed, fighting and vandalism. Village School reported two incidents (both HIB confirmed), and Orchard Hill Elementary reported no incidents in the categories tracked.
Anti-bullying coordinator Corey Delgado said Period 2 included 142 investigations across the district, of which 11 were affirmed and 15 were rejected after a preliminary-determination process. "Fifteen HIB complaints went through a preliminary determination process and were handled strictly through the code of conduct," Delgado said, noting that a preliminary determination does not mean the matter was ignored but that it did not meet the threshold for a full HIB investigation.
Delgado described training and programmatic work the district uses to prevent and respond to incidents. He reported 13 staff trainings across the district during the period and 38 student-facing programs, including peer leadership outreach at Montgomery High School, community rallies at Upper Middle School, morning meetings at Lower Middle School, outreach at Village Elementary and the Great Kindness Challenge at Orchard Hill. He also noted each building completes a self-assessment; the district average score was 76 out of 78 possible points.
Board members had an opportunity to ask procedural questions; McLaughlin and Delgado stressed that the self-assessment measures policy and procedure implementation rather than incident counts. McLaughlin emphasized the district reports SSDS data per New Jersey Department of Education requirements.
The board did not take formal action on the SSDS presentation during the meeting.
The district said it will continue to report SSDS data as required and to conduct trainings and student programs aimed at prevention and response.
