The Town of Norwood Board of Selectmen on Oct. 14 voted to approve a permit for an ice‑cream business in the plaza at 1001 Boston Brooklands Highway, contingent on the applicant providing an insurance certificate in his business name for that address.
The board said there was substantial confusion in the application paperwork: some permits and insurance documents were in a previous applicant’s name, while others used the new operator’s corporate name. Applicants told the board that the original application had been filed months earlier under a different name and that a neighboring business owner planned to complete the final steps and operate or transfer the business after permits were issued.
Applicants introduced themselves in the meeting: Ibrahim Mahawat identified himself as the applicant and explained that the original application process began in January and that financial and personal issues delayed completion. A working partner, who identified himself as Krish, explained that a neighboring owner intended to take over operations after buying the business from the original applicant.
Board members pressed for clear, consistent paperwork. Selectman Patrick Fosco asked pointedly about discrepancies: building‑permit paperwork, the signage on the building, and whether the insurance certificate matched the entity applying for the license. Applicants said they could provide an insurance policy in the name of the company that would be operating the store.
Selectmen agreed to approve the license on the condition that the applicant supply an insurance certificate naming the applicant’s company as the insured for the premises. Selectman John Lane made the motion; Selectman Donnelly seconded it. The board voted unanimously in favor of the conditional approval.
Ending: The board told the applicants to deliver the required insurance paperwork to the town clerk’s office; the license will remain contingent on receipt of that documentation.
