Council members discussed using the town's wood bank as an overflow distribution point this winter while stock builds and a formal distribution plan is developed.
“For right now, I think the plan is to work through Herbert,” Speaker 4 said, describing a temporary arrangement to assist residents who come to Red Mesa late in the season or who are elders and may run out of wood. The town will accept overflow deliveries and coordinate with Red Mesa for need verification.
Staff said the goal is to build inventory and create a stand-alone distribution plan next year. Volunteers will help with wood cutting and splitting; Speaker 4 encouraged interested residents to volunteer with Herbert and Red Mesa. The council also reported outreach to Talia at San Juan Economic Development for equipment assistance: “She’s been working to try to get us a wood splitter and some chaps,” Speaker 4 said, though the current status of that equipment was not specified.
Council members agreed to keep operating through Herbert for the current season and to revisit distribution arrangements once the town’s stock and procedure are sufficient to support an independent distribution program.
