Mayville adopts winter parking ordinance, sets seasonal permit at $50

The Mayville Common Council on Tuesday adopted an ordinance revising the city—s winter parking rules and set a seasonal winter parking permit fee of $50.

Under the ordinance (introduced as Ordinance 1151-2025), from Dec. 1 through April 1 annually no person shall park a motor vehicle on public streets between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. unless the vehicle displays a valid winter parking permit issued by the city clerk or designee. The ordinance text read at the meeting specifies the clerk will issue permits upon application and payment of the required fee; the fee amount is set as part of the city fee schedule.

The ordinance clarifies that possession of a winter parking permit does not exempt a vehicle from restrictions during a declared snow event or snow emergency. Council members discussed permit formats (decals, hang-tags), replacement fees, and enforcement logistics; staff said permits would be entered into a registration database to assist police during snow events.

Why it matters: Council members said the permit program will help police and public works manage winter parking and snow removal while providing a straightforward application process for residents who park on-street.

Votes and next steps

Alderson Henkel moved adoption of the ordinance amendment; Alderpersons Smith, Henkel, Newman and Olsen voted in favor. The council later set the seasonal permit fee at $50 by a separate motion; the fee motion passed on a roll call vote.
