City staff updated the Lennox City Council on a developing bike- and scooter-safety program planned with the local schools, saying the district has “jumped in both feet first” and will help organize spring sessions and outreach to parents.
The presenter told council the program has had “a couple positive meetings with the schools so far,” and that the schools will distribute sign-up brochures with a QR code. Staff said the event will include bike-safety instruction, helmet distribution as available, bike checks and staged real-world scenario practice using a controlled intersection or space, with police officers and school staff supervising.
Staff estimated the program could reach about 500 students and said the initial equipment goal was roughly 30 bikes to issue or service at the event. “It looks like 500 kids is what we're anticipating,” the presenter said. Helmets remain a priority; staff said the state provided helmets for an earlier event and the city would request additional state assistance to cover the larger anticipated turnout.
Council members asked about scooters and sidewalk/street rules as part of the curriculum. Staff said the program will cover rider behavior for bicycles and scooters and suggested offering certificates of completion that carry the police department logo. No formal council action was taken; council and staff concluded the update and directed staff to continue planning and outreach with the schools.
Ending: Staff will return with date and funding-source details as planning continues; council indicated support for moving forward with a spring program if funding and staff availability allow.
