Paul Robinson presented the post-event report for the Texas Outlaw Challenge, describing volunteer operations, participant statistics and estimated local economic impacts for the annual high-speed boating event.
Why it matters: Seabrook benefits from visitor spending, hotel room nights and event-driven revenues; council members asked about volunteer recruitment and ways to better track hotel bookings tied to the event.
Key points from Robinson’s presentation:
- Scale and history: The event began in 2008 and has grown; in 2025 Robinson reported roughly 110 registered boats and about 1,500 guests (post–COVID rebound from prior years). In peak years the event reached more than 200 boats and 2,000 registered guests.
- Economic estimates: Robinson provided a breakdown used to estimate local economic impact: transportation/fuel ($225,000 estimate), event food and beverage and accommodations (together totaling several hundred thousand dollars) and an overall supporting-local-commerce estimate of more than $750,000 over four days. Robinson estimated the event generated roughly 800+ room nights in the region on its weekend.
- Event costs: Robinson said his own event costs were in the range of $268,700 for operating, safety, advertising and awards. He said advertising and national/international impressions were an important part of the event’s marketing.
- Volunteer recruitment: Council asked how Robinson recruits volunteers; he said recognition (armbands, shirts) and a returning team culture are key to retention.
- Hotel tracking challenges: Robinson said many visiting boat crews do not book months in advance and sometimes don’t use event promo codes, making exact hotel attribution difficult despite an existing promo code trial at a local Quality Inn.
Action: Informational presentation only; council thanked Robinson and offered to help with hotel outreach and future coordination.
Ending: Robinson said the event will continue to seek more hotel rooms and vendor partnerships to grow spectator access; council members expressed support.
