The Choctaw County Commission on Oct. 7 approved proclamations naming October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the county.
Kirsty Gates, prevention education assistant for Penelope House, briefed the commission on services the Mobile-based domestic violence shelter provides to Choctaw County residents. She said Penelope House serves Mobile, Clarke, Washington and Choctaw counties, offers court advocacy and counseling and provides telephone-based services for residents who cannot travel to the shelter in Mobile.
The commission approved both proclamations on a voice vote. County staff said they would distribute the proclamations and work with Penelope House on outreach. No county funding commitments were made during the item; the presentation was informational and the proclamations were ceremonial acknowledgments.
