The Flemington-Raritan Regional School District recognized teacher Hannah Azafifa Yurea with the 2025 Fred Cotterrell Social Studies Educator Award during its Sept. 11 meeting.
Board and district officials praised Yurea for classroom planning, empathy, inclusive history instruction, and attention to students' social-emotional needs. Dr. Tony DeMarco, principal of Reading Fleming Intermediate School, and Hank Bitton, executive director of the New Jersey Council for Social Studies, joined the district in presenting the honor.
Superintendent's report and administration staff also provided enrollment figures for the start of the 2025–26 school year. The district reported the following enrollment counts on Sept. 11, 2025: JP Case — 731; Rufus — 699; Barley Sheaf — 376; Copper Hill — 536; Francis A. DeMar — 433; Robert Hunter — 380. Off-campus preschool programs reported smaller enrollments (First Friends 14; Precious Gems 38; Norwescap Head Start 15; KinderCare 24), and out-of-district placement counted 15 students, for a total reported enrollment of 3,346 students.
The board thanked staff and educators for their work at the opening of the school year and announced upcoming back-to-school nights for individual schools.
