Teaneck board elects new president and vice president during reorganization meeting

The Teaneck Board of Education elected a new president and vice president during its Jan. 7 reorganization meeting at Teaneck High School.

The board secretary, Dr. Victor Anaya, opened the meeting and administered oaths to newly elected trustees earlier in the evening. Nominations for president and vice president followed the swearing-in.

During nominations for board president, a trustee moved to nominate Ed (named in the roll as “Ed”/“Ed Hoff” on the record). After roll-call voting the board declared Ed elected president. The board then conducted nominations and successive roll calls for vice president; after multiple nominations and votes the board elected Cassandra Reyes as vice president.

The nominations and votes were conducted by roll call. The session included multiple seconded nominations and several members explaining their reasons before voting. Board members who participated in the discussion and votes included Dr. Victor Anaya (board secretary), Clara Williams, Jerry Kirschenbaum, Jonathan Rodriguez, Jennifer Levy, Nadia Hussain, David Gruber, James (Jim) Wolf and Cassandra Reyes.

The board president assumed the chair for the remainder of the meeting and opened the meeting’s business. No formal policy or ordinance changed as a direct result of the election beyond the transfer of presiding responsibilities.

The personnel changes are internal to board leadership and will affect committee assignments and who presides over subsequent meetings. The board did not announce committee reassignments at the reorganization meeting.

The board will next meet under the schedule adopted at the reorganization meeting; the new president indicated priorities including improved meeting practices, community engagement and exploring a future bond referendum.
