Board limits public comment to 30 minutes and moves initial executive session; first executive session capped at 45 minutes

The Teaneck Board of Education changed its meeting procedures at the Jan. 7 reorganization meeting, voting to limit total public-comment time and to reposition executive sessions.

The board approved a motion to limit public-comment time to 30 minutes for the combined public comment periods (the board added an explicit option to extend that limit by vote). Trustees discussed concerns about balancing public input and meeting length; supporters said the change would improve efficiency while opponents urged flexibility for substantial, community-wide issues.

Trustees also voted to move the initial executive session to follow the first public-comment period so that trustees can consider public input prior to discussing agenda items in closed session when allowed by law. The board then set a 45-minute cap on that first executive session; the board said a second executive session later in the evening remains possible if needed.

Board counsel and multiple trustees clarified that executive sessions are limited by law to the topics listed in statute (personnel, litigation, contract negotiations, etc.) and that not all public-comment topics can be discussed in closed session. The motion to move executive session, adopt the 30-minute public-comment limit, and set a 45-minute cap passed by roll-call votes recorded in the meeting.
