Airport open house draws large crowd; development will remove key parking and staff cite logistics concerns

Airport staff reported that the Carson City Airport open house drew a substantially larger crowd than the previous year, that off-airport parking used this year will not be available for future events because of the Eagle Valley Hangar development, and that the airport is addressing several maintenance issues including entry-gate damage and a fence repair.
The manager said the event's parking lot filled and staff turned people away, and that attendance likely doubled compared with the prior year. Staff estimated attendance in the low thousands and said volunteers and sponsors helped raise funds; proceeds included a donated uncertified simulator to the Civil Air Patrol and donations to local nonprofits. Because the south-side parking used for the event is now committed to the new Eagle Valley Hangar Development, staff said they were exploring alternate parking solutions and possible relocation of the open house to the north side of the airport.
Staff also reported that an entry gate was damaged when a trailer struck bollards at the airport entrance; the parts were ordered and staff plans to complete the repair and submit receipts to insurance. A motorcycle accident also damaged a fence along Collier Parkway; fence repairs will take approximately eight weeks because some components are on back order.
Fuel-sales and operations data were incomplete because not all FBOs (fixed-base operators) submitted information on time; staff said records were current through August. The manager said aircraft operations appeared lower in the data but cautioned that a blind spot at the runway 27 approach makes the operations count unreliable; staff plans to install a second ADS‑B receiver in the new SRE building to improve data.
The chair and staff also discussed pursuing the original plan to transfer airport property ownership from the city to the airport authority, a change staff said would streamline grant work and FAA coordination. Staff said the authority now has stronger financials and leadership and will ask city staff to restart that transfer process.
Jim Sutton, the newly selected secretary-treasurer, said he has been briefed on the authority's finances and that he and staff are working through outstanding items in the board packet. The board did not set a date for the next open-house or finalize alternative parking arrangements at the meeting.
