City staff said the municipal budget process is underway and that, as is typical for the season, initial figures show a projected deficit that staff is actively working to reduce by meeting with department heads and identifying revenue and expenditure adjustments.
Finance Director Jennifer Solensky will present an update at the Sept. 9 meeting describing where the city is in the process and measures being pursued to balance the budget. Staff noted state transportation-aid and other state-aid numbers are not finalized until early October, which means some estimates in the preliminary budget will be tentative and could shift by about $100,000 in either direction once the state numbers arrive.
The preview said staff will continue working with departments and present options to the council; no final budget is expected at the Sept. 9 meeting.
