District reports near-complete high-school tennis courts, continuing hiring challenges and ongoing safety meetings

Superintendent Matt Loom told the board that installation of the high-school tennis courts on the Bennington High School campus is nearly complete: poles for lights were being set the week of the meeting and cement work remains around the softball press box to provide permanent access to the courts. Loom thanked high-school administrators, the construction team and DLR Group for work to have the facility ready for spring sports.
Loom also reported staffing needs: one open high-school science teacher position was being held open and absorbed into the schedule for the first semester but will be re-posted for possible second-semester hire; the district also reported several open classified positions, ongoing bus-driver recruitment challenges, some open food-service jobs and about five open paraprofessional positions against a budgeted complement. Loom said he is attending university job fairs (UNO, Kearney, Midland, Wayne State) to recruit teachers and paraprofessionals and that the district has seen positive outcomes from practicum and student-teaching connections.
The superintendent said the district will hold four safety and security meetings during the year and reported the first was held the prior Wednesday where staff reviewed safety and security items and related protocols.
Board members thanked staff and construction partners; no formal action was required on these information items.
