Committee approves amendment to Health and Human Services fleet policy to tighten reservations and assign vehicles

The Adams County Health and Human Services Committee approved an amendment to the department’s fleet vehicle policy that clarifies reservation expectations and assigns some vehicles to specific divisions.

Under the revised language, staff are expected to reserve vehicles within 48 hours of scheduling training, conferences, home visits or other events unless there is an emergency; management approval is required for exemptions. An appendix added to the policy assigns a subset of vehicles to specific divisions such as crisis response or children and family services so those teams have shared access to vehicles for emergency calls.

Committee members discussed use-case examples, including an instance where a staff member took a vehicle home the evening before an early-morning mandatory review out of town because it was more efficient than driving from the office that morning. The committee clarified the policy does not create routine home-assignment of vehicles; instead, it sets criteria for occasional home-use when travel logistics make it more efficient.

Motion and vote: The committee approved the amendment on a motion by Pete, seconded by Dan; the motion passed by voice vote with no opposing votes recorded.

The policy language is intended to increase vehicle utilization and reduce idle fleet time while preserving manager discretion for exceptions.
