BHS Pep Band returns for third year, recruits students for fall gigs

Students at Binghamton High School said the school’s Pep Band is in its third year and is actively recruiting new members for performances this fall. "So we're really excited this year for Pep Band. We got a few new members this year. We have many returning members. So this is our third year Pep Band that we've been doing here at BHS. That has hasn't happened in a long time," Student 1 said.
The students said the group performs at school events and supports the football team. "So we're really excited that we're back here in action, here at the football stadium and, getting everything ready to go to cheer on our team," Student 1 said. Another student said the band has several upcoming engagements: "We have gigs coming up a lot this month and throughout November, but it's going really good," Student 2 said.
Band members described educational and social benefits. "I think that something like Pep Band is really good for a lot of music students. It gives them something to be able to do, and then it also just allows them to be able to do something outside of just, like, regular band classes," Student 3 said. Student 4 added that members learn musical skills that go beyond classroom instruction: "I think it's just learning how to do stuff that most people, like, don't really typically know how to do. And it benefits a lot more than you think it would, like, with rhythm and just knowing stuff and, you know, in general, it helps."
Students also noted the group's social value. "It's amazing. Everybody in this group is so sweet. They're all amazing, great people. I'm really close friends with a lot of them. And it's just nice to be surrounded by people who also enjoy doing what I do," Student 2 said.
Students said the Pep Band can expose members to future musical opportunities. "They could go on later in life and they could play pep bands, like, in college or they can play in different groups in the community. So it really just kinda shows them that there are different facets to the whole music world, and this is just 1 of those that they can do," Student 1 said.
