The McHenry County Board of Health Personnel Committee on Oct. 22 reviewed the employee recognition committee's plan and expressed support for using the previously approved $10,000 budget for staff appreciation and recognition activities.
A staff presenter explained that the county board had approved $10,000 for the program last year and that an employee-led committee has been meeting to plan recognition events and options for anniversary gifts. The presenter said the committee is using a vendor agreement with Amazon for many physical items that are not treated as cash for tax purposes.
Committee members discussed whether to give employees gift cards or physical items. One member said gift cards are popular: "I still think the gift cards are the best. I do. I think people appreciate that," the member said. Staff and members clarified tax implications: physical items purchased through the county's vendor are not taxable to employees under the current arrangement, while gift cards are treated as cash and are taxable.
Members asked that the employee recognition committee be supported and that selected recognition options remain within the $10,000 budget. The committee agreed to have the item placed on the Board of Health agenda so minutes will document the committee's direction for auditors.
The recognition week schedule was discussed; staff said an all-staff breakfast is planned for the 18th and that the committee wants flexibility to award winners of games/events with appropriate prizes while staying within budget.
