District reports steady implementation of Illustrative Math and building coaching supports

Upper Dublin School District staff told the education committee May 7 that the district has continued implementation of Illustrative Math at the elementary level and has built coaching, assessment and professional development supports to sustain the adoption.
Staff described summer kickoff professional development, the creation of a centralized “math hub” for teacher resources, and revision of unit assessments in grades K–5 to align with the new resource and state test rigor. District coaches supported classroom implementation with planning, co‑teaching and reflection cycles; administrators reported monthly learning walks that focused on student‑centered indicators such as making student thinking public and student interaction with peers’ thinking.
Presenters said they observed growth in instructional practices and student mathematical language this year. The district intends to continue professional development on effective mathematics teaching, student‑centered classrooms, fluency, and to formalize coaching lab cycles in future years.
Committee members commended elementary teachers and coaches for the implementation effort during a year that also included other major adoptions in the district.
