Committee outlines phased review of 4000 and 5000 policy sections, requests bargaining-unit engagement

The Newburgh City School District policy committee outlined a phased approach to reviewing its 4000 (personnel) and 5000 (student) policy sections and said it will meet with bargaining units before bringing recommended changes to the board.
Acting Superintendent Anix Peterson told the committee that the 4000 section would be reviewed with bargaining units when they return in September and that the proposed changes were mostly grammatical or tense updates. The committee agreed to a first-read process for the 4,000 series and to allow bargaining-unit review before board action.
Peterson warned that the 5000 student-policy section is extensive and would likely require a longer, staged process. "That 5,000 section also, if we are really going to do that thorough review, could take us quite a long time because I think there's close how many, are in that section, mister McCoy?" she said; a committee member estimated "20, 30" policies in the series. The committee discussed conducting the bulk of student-policy changes on a cycle so they would take effect in the following school year to avoid midyear disruption.
Members asked staff to bring chunked sections back to policy so the board could work through discrete policy areas (for example, the grading and discipline policies) with stakeholder input. The committee adjourned after setting those expectations.
