The Beverly City Council on Monday approved a letter from the 2025 council to be placed in a Beverly Little League time capsule that the league plans to open June 11, 2050.
Councilor Kieran Sweeney presented the letter (Order 237) and read it into the record. The letter notes Beverly Little League’s founding on June 11, 1950, calls the league “a cornerstone of youth development and community spirit,” and records that in 2025 more than 130 volunteers supported nearly 440 players across 38 teams.
Councilor Sweeney said the time capsule will be buried in November and that Historic Beverly is providing the capsule. “We hope your city council continues to champion Beverly’s youth sports and the volunteers who make them thrive,” Sweeney read as part of the council’s message to its 2050 counterparts.
Shane Fisher, information and engagement officer for the Beverly Little League board, and Matt Mariano, the league’s president, described the season-long effort to assemble the capsule and the league’s 75th-season events. Fisher said the project grew out of conversations with original alumni and a broader effort to capture memories from seasons when fields were “all dirt.” “This is just one of many things we did over the past year, and we’re gonna capture a lot of memories,” Fisher said.
Mariano praised Fisher’s work organizing volunteers, a parade and outreach during the anniversary season.
The council voted, 8-0, to approve the letter for inclusion in the capsule. Councilors recessed briefly after the vote so council members could greet league players and families; several councilors said they or family members have long connections to the league.
The signed council letter and the time capsule will be kept by Beverly Little League and Historic Beverly until the scheduled opening in 2050.
