The Urban Enterprise Association approved three separate grants to support downtown businesses and community enhancements at its meeting.
A business at 601 Michigan Ave (identified as Enzo in the application) requested assistance to install an illuminated sign. The total project cost listed in the packet was $15,810.80; the applicant requested 50% of that cost, $7,905.40. The UEA approved the grant after a board member moved and another seconded the motion. Staff noted the applicant had one quote from Legacy Signs of Westville, which has completed downtown work in recent years.
The UEA also approved a $10,000 grant for 910 State Street, a project led by Dudley Byler to repave the parking lot serving the former fire station/older-adult activity center. The total project cost provided to the board was about $41,000; the applicant submitted multiple quotes, with bids ranging across the submissions. The board moved and seconded approval by voice vote.
Separately, the board approved a $500 community enhancement grant for Community Development and Planning to assist with decorating Plaza 618 and replacing wreaths, bows and bulbs for the holiday celebration; part of the funding will help purchase the tree. The UEA funded the same item last year for $500.
A late application from April Kelly requesting kitchen equipment and electrical upgrades for a coffee-bar feature was received less than 48 hours before the meeting and was not included in the packet; the board elected to defer consideration to the next meeting in November to allow full review.
