City staff says traffic-modeling issues are slowing comprehensive plan update

City staff told the La Porte City Plan Commission that work on the city’s comprehensive plan update has been slowed by problems using available regional traffic-modeling data and tools, and that staff are seeking solutions before finalizing transportation recommendations.
“We have encountered some issues with the traffic modeling aspect of the plan, in terms of the usability of the existing modeling that’s available at a regional level,” said Craig (last name not specified), a city staff member responsible for the plan update. He said staff are “trying to find solutions for what we need to do with regard to the traffic modeling aspect,” and expected to have answers soon.
Craig said the public-input phase of the plan has concluded. Staff held an open house earlier in the process and gathered input at the Sunflower Fair and the Farmers Market (Farmed and Forged event). With public input complete, staff are focused on drafting recommendations and maps and plan to hold a public open house to display draft recommendations before beginning the adoption process.
No vote was taken on the comprehensive plan at the meeting. Staff did not provide a new timeline for adoption but said resolving the transportation modeling issue is the current gating item for finalizing the plan’s scope and schedule.
