Grosse Ile officials announce Meridian paving, bridge cameras and school traffic measures

Grosse Ile Township representative Joe Porcirrelli updated residents on multiple near-term traffic and public-safety measures, saying a Wayne County-funded paving project on Meridian Road will begin Sept. 6 and last about a week.
Porcirrelli said, “That’s gonna start on September 6, Saturday at 5AM. It'll go for about a week.” He advised drivers to use alternate routes during that period because there will be temporary closures along Meridian between the island-drive area and Bridge Road.
The township representative also said web cameras for the bridge are nearly complete. Porcirrelli said DTE installed a new pole and electrical feed, and the cameras will provide views down Meridian, across the toll bridge and toward West Jefferson to help detect intermittent closures.
Concrete repair work on the roadway is scheduled to begin the week after the update and is expected to take a couple of weeks, with occasional single‑lane or side‑of‑road temporary closures. Porcirrelli said motorists should still be able to get through during the repairs.
Porcirrelli said the new Grosse Ile elementary school near Park Lane and Church roads has doubled the number of children traveling in that area. He said the county will install a blinking light and make the intersection a 4‑way stop to improve safety for students walking and biking to school.
Separately, Porcirrelli announced a grand opening at the township football field tomorrow at 5 p.m.; admission to the game will be free and a pregame event is planned from about 5 to 7 p.m.
