Needham committee says stop‑sign rulemaking is ready; speed cushions headed to Select Board

The Town of Needham Transportation Safety Committee reported that draft stop‑sign regulations for locations discussed at prior meetings are ready for formal signature by the Select Board and are on that board’s agenda next week. Committee staff said the rules use the town’s long‑standing practice of assigning regulation ID numbers based on the date of the hearing.

Committee members and staff said speed cushions the committee recommended for pilot installation are on the Select Board agenda for information and possible approval. Staff described the cushions as seasonal devices that the town would install and remove; because the meeting fell near the end of the warmer season, staff recommended installing them now only if the Select Board approves, to avoid installing and then removing them within a few weeks.

Committee staff also said the town will present existing installations and a pilot proposal to the Select Board. Members discussed asking the Town Manager’s office and Miles (staff) to piggyback the speed‑cushion item onto the stop‑sign regulation agenda so Select Board members see both items at the same meeting.

The committee heard that some locations will require multiple sign installations and that staff will be present at the Select Board meeting to explain the proposals and identify who will be responsible for installation. Members asked staff to clarify seasonal removal plans and the likely pilot duration during that presentation.

The committee held no separate vote on either the stop‑sign regulations or the cushions; staff will bring both items to the Select Board for action next week.

Looking ahead, staff said they will continue traffic counts and monitoring at locations where treatments are proposed and will report back to the committee after Select Board action.
