Commission member Marissa reported Sept. 4 that the Recreation Commission will revise its welcome-basket program after a pilot period that delivered more than 60 baskets to new residents.
Marissa said the previous delivery method sometimes left baskets at vacant or under-construction homes or on porches when residents were at work. To improve effectiveness, the program will move to a resident-initiated sign-up: flyers, social media posts and notices at Township Hall will tell new residents who moved to the island within the past six months how to contact the Recreation Department to receive a basket.
“All you have to do is is call, the number, and we will either deliver the basket to you or meet you at the recreation department for you to be able to pick it up,” Marissa said. She added that the Recreation Department will continue coordinating with local businesses to stock the baskets with grocery-related items and information.
Commissioners suggested placing a notice in the township e-newsletter and other outlets to increase uptake. Marissa said the change aims to ensure baskets reach current residents rather than vacant properties.
