Blacksburg VFD to host open house during Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 5, 2025

Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 5, 2025, at Station 3, 407 Hubbard Street, the department said.
The event is timed to National Fire Prevention Week and is intended to give families and children a chance to see fire apparatus, ask firefighters about their work and learn basic fire-safety measures, department representatives said.
Todd Jones, a driver, engine operator and fire investigator with the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department, described the open house and safety priorities: "During Fire Safety Week, we have an open house here on 10/05/2025 at Station 3 at 407 Hubbard Street. During that day, 1 to 4, we'll have a lot of the trucks out." Jones said the event is an opportunity for children and parents to ask questions about firefighters and fire prevention.
Jones emphasized routine precautions the department discusses in outreach: "We've seen instances where smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have saved lives," he said. He also mentioned home fire extinguishers and cooking-fire response, saying, "A lot of people, panic and don't know what to do." He added that fire prevention is an ongoing effort: "Fire prevention is a year long, task and and ongoing process."
Jones said the department is primarily volunteer-run, with two paid town staff and the remainder volunteers. "We're a volunteer organization. We have 2 paid, staff in the town. The rest of us are volunteers," he said.
Jones encouraged families to attend: "So we encourage you to come out, bring your kids and family, and have a great day at, Station 3 here in Blacksburg."
