The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to accept reimbursement funding from the Measure A North County subregion program for a citywide school crossing improvement project.
Director of Public Works Brett Filagoni told the council the project targets mid‑block and uncontrolled intersections where pedestrian–vehicle collisions are more likely and aims to improve visibility and accessibility for students and families. The project includes 55 crossing improvements and installation or modification of 72 ADA ramps, Filagoni said.
Funding for the project includes an SBCAG agreement that will provide $112,000, Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds and gas tax money designated for Safe Routes to School, the staff presentation said. Filagoni said some larger crossings that require lighting and additional engineering — for example Donovan and Western — will be handled as separate projects because they need more design and funding.
Filagoni described outreach to school principals and district maintenance staff, including on‑site observations during peak hours, and said that several proposed locations were changed after discussions with school staff to better match student travel patterns.
Council members asked about lighting and longer‑term projects; Filagoni said lighting is being pursued on larger crossings but is outside the scope and budget of the Measure A‑funded project. The council approved the funding agreement by roll call.
