Augusta commissioners approved a measure that clears several legal obstacles to a planned redevelopment of the Dogwood Terrace public-housing site, allowing the Augusta Housing Authority to move forward with demolition and design work.
Housing-authority representatives told the commission they plan to demolish the existing Dogwood Terrace units and redevelop the site with mixed affordable housing — a mix that could include tax-credit units, project-based vouchers and possibly public-housing units depending on the developer selected. The authority said the site is fully vacated and that design and demolition procurement work is underway.
Commission staff recommended abandoning rights-of-way and roadway segments within the Dogwood Terrace footprint to enable the redevelopment. Those road-abandonment actions were presented as a standard step to allow the authority to consolidate parcels and proceed with demolition and new construction. Commissioners approved the abandonment after a hearing in which no members of the public objected.
Why it matters: The property is aging and costly to maintain, the housing authority said; redevelopment could increase the quantity and quality of affordable housing stock on the site. Commissioners emphasized that future site plans will be vetted through public meetings and that the selected developer will return with final plans and schedules.
Next steps: The housing authority plans to select a development partner and move to bid for demolition within 30 to 60 days; commissioners asked to be included in upcoming revitalization and community meetings.
