Commission hears update on proposed data-center annexation and zoning-code amendments; multiple public hearings expected

Planning staff told the Cannon Falls Planning Commission on Aug. 11 that negotiations are progressing with a developer for a proposed data-center project. Staff reported a tentative agreement with the township on annexation terms and said the developer intends to amend its May application to reflect code changes negotiated with city staff.
Staff said the city will need several code amendments and multiple individual public hearings related to the project. A joint work session with the City Council is likely before further planning commission hearings so that council members are aligned on the proposed code changes and application revisions. Staff asked commissioners to attend future sessions; staff also said they received an additional application on the day of the meeting and that a planning review schedule would follow.
No formal decision or vote was taken on the data-center project during the meeting; staff framed the item as an update and scheduling matter. Commissioners discussed the need for coordinated public hearings and for clear submittal deadlines so staff and the council can review materials in advance.
Staff indicated the track-related package of amendments and public-hearing items will produce five individual public hearings when the application is formally processed; the matter will be scheduled for forthcoming planning commission and council agenda packets.
