Nominee Olga Lucia Herrera, who said she bikes with the Spokane Bicycle Club, appeared before the Spokane City Council during agenda setting to interview for a seat on the Bicycle Advisory Board.
Herrera described herself as “a bike commuter” and said she bicycles for commuting, road and mountain biking. She told council members she would begin by listening to established advisory-board members to learn what has worked and then offer her ideas. Herrera said safety is her primary focus and that routes should be accessible for older people and children.
Herrera proposed producing clear, user-friendly maps for different audiences, including visitors attending large events such as the World Soccer Cup. She said those maps should show safe ways to get from point A to point B and help tourists and locals reach neighborhood businesses and services. On partnerships, Herrera said cyclists are part of the local economy and businesses should consider where people can safely park bikes: “We just have to make it safe for the people to get there and remind the business that there is that need to have, like, where are we gonna put our bikes?”
When council members asked about her favorite route, Herrera said she prefers a ride from her house to downtown across the walking bridge and through Sherman, calling it the safest route from the South Hill to Gonzaga events. The council thanked Herrera for applying and said she would hear back from the council about the nomination.
No formal appointment vote was recorded in the agenda-setting meeting; the transcript shows only the interview and that a decision or follow-up would come later.
