Martin County organizers set Sept. 11 memorial walk, ceremony at Jock Leighton Park

Organizers with the Martin County Police Athletic League announced a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony at Jock Leighton Park at 8:30 a.m., followed by a walk across the Veterans Memorial Bridge at about 9 a.m., aiming to grow participation from last year.
Noel Del Valle, representing the Martin County Police Athletic League, said the event will include local first responders and community groups and encouraged broad participation. "We're gonna be there with the sheriff's department, the fire department, the school district, and Martin County POW supporters," Del Valle said.
The event is intended as a community remembrance of those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "This is a great opportunity to join the community, join your fellow firefighters, as well as Martin County SO, and, to come out and commemorate those that made the ultimate sacrifice back on 02/2001, September 11," Del Valle said.
Superintendent Michael Main of the Martin County School District addressed student participation and district rules for excused absences. He said families may bring kindergarten through eighth-grade students but that parents or guardians must remain with elementary- and middle-school students during the event. "We cannot have any students unsupervised kindergarten through eighth grade," Main said. He added that high school students are permitted to drive themselves to participate.
Main also said the district will grant an excused absence for students who return to school wearing the event wristband issued for 2025. "In order to receive an excused absence, we do need to make sure that you have the band from the event and the band is different this year," he said.
Organizers asked participants to prepare for summer heat: Del Valle said there will be water stations and advised attendees to bring sneakers and hydrate. "So hydrate. We will have some water stations out there as well, and then definitely bring sneakers," he said.
The announcement listed Jock Leighton Park as the ceremony site and described a route across the Veterans Memorial Bridge, returning to the park. No registration details, permit references, or additional logistical instructions were specified in the announcement.
Organizers noted the goal of increasing turnout compared with last year and invited the community to participate in the commemorative event.
