Student services report: 65 students designated truant, enrollment down about 134 since 5-day count

The Newberry County School District’s student services department reported attendance, discipline and enrollment figures to the Board of Trustees on Sept. 22.
As of Sept. 17, 65 students were categorized as truant out of a K–12 enrollment of 5,384, the presenter said. The hearing-office recommendation and suspension report for the same date showed 12 students recommended to the hearing office and a total of 109 incidents resulting in out-of-school suspension year to date. The presenter noted these figures reflect the school year in progress; September totals were not complete at the time of the report.
The presenter said the five-day enrollment count at the previous meeting had been 5,518 and that the district’s current figure of 5,384 represents a drop of about 134 students; staff suggested part of the difference could be related to prekindergarten students, of which the district has roughly 300.
On transportation, staff highlighted MyRider, a K‑12 app that provides estimated bus arrival times. Parents must register using a 10‑digit state ID number; the app shows estimated times for bus stops and can reflect delays such as railroad crossings. Staff said principals and parents are being encouraged to use the app.
Staff said they will include comparative charts to show last year’s numbers in future reports to give trustees more context.
