Students converting plastic bags to sleeping mats for donation; school council seeks to grow project districtwide

A student identified as Cameron described the project as a joint effort between the student council community-service committee and the Energy and Environment committee. The students collected plastic grocery bags, processed them into strips and braided them into mats. The first event ran from about 9 a.m. to midafternoon; because the team was still learning the process, production of each mat took most of the day, but students said they expect to make multiple mats more quickly as volunteers become accustomed to the process.
Students said they will document the project as part of the Texas Association of Student Councils reporting cycle for six-week project submissions and hope to reuse scraps for recycling. The project organizers also reported plans to expand the effort into a districtwide event with other Big Country schools and to use the activity for student recognition and awards submission.
No board action was required; the trustees thanked the students for their presentation and encouraged expansion of the volunteer effort.
