A council member explained the reason for the demolition: the structure was uninhabitable following a fire (and other nearby properties have been deemed uninhabitable for health and safety reasons). "One of the things we're trying to do is we're trying to at least abate those buildings that are a negative influence on the community and that neighborhood," the council member said, adding that units with occupants meet health and safety requirements.
The council moved and seconded acceptance of the project on the consent calendar and voted in favor. Staff said the demolitions and abatements are intended to improve neighborhood safety and public health; no additional funding or follow‑up implementation steps were identified at the meeting beyond standard project acceptance and abatement procedures.
