Deerfield approves 40 Avon C50 respirators for police officers

The Village of Deerfield Board of Trustees voted Oct. 6 to approve the purchase of 40 Avon C50 respirators (gas masks) for the police department.
Staff said the department’s existing masks were expired and that the new equipment — purchased from Mallory Safety Systems of California — will protect officers against certain chemical irritants and provide filtration for biological and radiological contaminants. The purchase price in the meeting record was $24,003.59; staff described the purchase as a budgeted item under the $25,000 threshold.
Officials said each officer will be fitted and must complete OSHA-required certification to wear the respirator. The fire department provided a fitting machine to test seal integrity; once an officer is fitted and certified each will be assigned a mask to keep in a duty bag. Staff estimated delivery at 6–7 weeks after an order is placed and said filter replacement will be budgeted in future cycles.
A presenter listed neighboring departments that issue similar equipment, including Morton Grove, Skokie, Lincolnwood and Highland Park, and said the village views the purchase as part of routine preparedness.
The board approved the resolution by roll call.
