Marion County Community Corrections Director Scott Hole updated the Indianapolis Veterans Court board on several operational matters at the Duval facility, including an ongoing peer review, removal of a long-used metal storage hut, and a facility assessment requested by the City Controller.
Hole told the board that three fellow IACAC directors were on site conducting a peer review (what the agency previously called an audit) and that county staff expected to receive the reviewers' scores and provide results at a future meeting. "We expect to get, to do well on that, but, it is they were scoring as I left," Hole said.
Hole said crews had removed approximately five dumpsters' worth of material from a metal storage hut behind the building and that the county was working with a contractor to dismantle and recycle the hut. "We do expect to have that building down before the end of this year," he said.
On the facility assessment, Hole told the board the controller's review included findings and repair-cost estimates that he questioned. He said some repair quotes the assessment cited appeared to be overstated and that some findings did not reflect Duval's use as a residential facility. "I don't entirely agree with some of the findings, and certainly not some of the dollar amounts," Hole said, noting in particular what he described as an incorrect roof-cost figure.
Hole also recognized staff achievements and constraints: he reported that Captain Jeffrey Sutt — who oversees custody officers at Duval — completed the Indiana Department of Corrections Emerging Leaders program, a year-long certificate program, and that the facility was down to a single captain of security. The director said he would review the facility-assessment report more thoroughly and return with a formal update.
The board's next meeting was set for Thursday, Nov. 13 at the same location, the chair said.
