Board renews Arroyo Vista Charter School for five years; principal highlights programs and student outcomes

Arroyo Vista Charter School’s five-year renewal petition was approved unanimously by the Chula Vista Elementary School District board after a presentation by principal Mary Margaret Landers.
Mary Margaret Landers, principal of Arroyo Vista Charter School, told the board the school serves about 914 students from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade and highlighted its 90/10 dual-immersion program, visual and performing arts instruction, a middle-school program with electives, and a STEAM studio funded by a Department of Defense grant for military-connected families.
Landers said the school’s 2024 CAST results showed 79.8 percent of students met or exceeded standards in English language arts and 58.9 percent met or exceeded in math. Landers also described site supports for English learners, including a full-time English-language instructional assistant and small-group supports, and she acknowledged chronic absenteeism as an area targeted for improvement.
Trustees praised the school’s results and asked questions about supports used to drive growth. Landers and district staff described turnaround leadership plans, targeted instructional assistants funded through the school’s LCAP allocation, and coaching supports from district instructional teams.
Trustee Dominguez Cervantes moved to approve the charter renewal; Trustee Tolson seconded. The motion carried with a unanimous vote. The renewal covers July 2025 through June 2030.
The board also recognized Arroyo Vista staff and families in attendance and thanked the school for programs serving military families and for initiatives aimed at bilingual instruction and arts education.
