District outlines crosswalk, camera and training timelines in monthly safety update

District safety staff briefed the Chula Vista Elementary School District board on site safety work including city‑led crosswalk projects, a districtwide camera installation schedule and expanded staff training.

Safety and operations staff said the city has approved a suite of crosswalk and signage projects at multiple schools and estimated a 6‑ to 24‑month timeline for completion. Projects listed by staff included upgraded advanced warning school signage and laddered thermoplastic crosswalks, time‑restricted parking signage and a planned four‑way crosswalk adjacent to Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School. Board members pressed staff to ensure traffic studies occur during school drop‑off and pick‑up times rather than off‑peak hours.

The district’s vendor has evaluated camera needs at each campus; sites will receive a minimum of four to six cameras depending on configuration and equipment has been ordered. Staff said they expect the camera project to be completed by June 30, 2025, if not earlier.

Safety staff described a two‑tiered training program that includes districtwide sessions and follow‑up, site‑level incident drills using the district’s emergency alert system and integration with RapidSOS to speed dispatch notifications. The district said some sites still need level‑two active trainings and that it will produce a list of which sites remain untrained. Trustees asked that principals and union partners be included in scheduling to minimize staff coverage problems during hands‑on trainings.

On substitute coverage, staff said the district is exploring tablets at each site to enroll substitutes in mandatory training upon check‑in rather than requiring individual registration across sites. Trustees also asked for a timeline or deadline for completing the second‑level training for all sites.
