BPAC technical review member says Acequia Trail realignment skipped committee review; requests design changes

Member Gary Schiffmiller told the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee that a recent realignment of a segment of the Acequia Trail was undertaken without the committee’s review and that the new alignment contains multiple abrupt turns.
"It's a terrible alignment," Schiffmiller said, noting three 90-degree turns in a short distance that make the route uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for cyclists. He said BPAC was not notified and that the committee could have suggested design improvements.
Schiffmiller also reported on the Henry Lynch Road project and asked that designers include ramps from the bike lanes so cyclists who prefer to remain on the road can access the roundabout safely and that rollover curbs be used to allow easier left turns from the bike lane.
When another member noted that the Acequia Trail realignment is a county project, Schiffmiller acknowledged the jurisdictional issue but said BPAC should have been given opportunity for review. He said he will attend future meetings on the Acequia Trail extension and requested closer coordination with project staff so BPAC can provide input on design details before construction is completed.
