Two residents raised safety concerns at the Oct. 15 Auburn School Committee meeting about a school bus stop on the sharp, blind curve where Old Danville Road meets Tournament Drive.
"I live at 15 Tournament Drive and it's a nice sharp curve And the cars drive really, really fast," said Anna (last name not provided during public comment). She said the stop is "right on the corner" and that her family and others have "seen ... multiple cars go off the road."
Jamie Zhao, who said the family has raised the issue previously with the district, described the location as "a blind corner on a downhill, and the crossing for the bus is directly in the blind side of cars coming over the top of the hill." Zhao said the repaving of the road last year removed earlier traffic-calming effects and increased vehicle speeds.
Zhao added, "I will say I've witnessed 4 cars in less than a year go off the road right where, the student would be standing with her little sister." Both speakers asked the committee to review the stop location so the child waiting for the bus would not be in a blind spot.
Chairperson Pam Albert and staff asked the commenters to leave contact information so staff could follow up. At 294.825 in the transcript the chair asked the speakers to leave names and contact details "just in case, doctor Doris wants to follow-up with either 1 of you for more information." Superintendent Dr. Sue Doris was identified as the staff member the committee would use for follow-up.
No committee action or referral was taken at the meeting; the comments were made during the public participation portion of the agenda.
