At the meeting speakers said she led All-Texas 5A in strikeouts with 420 in a season and that her overall career total was cited at 1,022 strikeouts. Council members also noted college recognitions including Freshman of the Year and conference all-freshmen and all-conference honors; one presenter said Laniz recorded 201 strikeouts in a conference season and helped her college program to multiple playoff appearances for the first time in program history.
Laniz spoke briefly about injuries that cost her playing time. “In January, I got hit in the face with a softball. So I had a broken nose. So I had to miss several games,” Laniz said, and she added she also missed time later in the season because of back problems. At the meeting she said she missed “I think it was 7 games in total.”
Councilmember Javier Ramirez and other council members congratulated Laniz and her family; speakers urged her to continue her studies and athletics. Organizers took photographs at the close of the presentation.
The recognition was purely ceremonial; no formal council action or budgetary commitment was recorded with the presentation.
Laniz said she is majoring in criminal justice and that she planned to return to campus after a summer break.
