Kim Nyberg of the Madison Area Arts Alliance presented a proposal for public-art golf-cart tours that will take small groups around downtown cultural sites and murals.
Nyberg said the “artsy” golf-cart tours are a partnership with Acree Alley Carts and supported by the Jefferson County Board of Tourism. The tours will run about 45 minutes to an hour, cost $25 per patron and are intended both for visitors and residents who want an in-depth look at public art. Nyberg said the cart used for tours will be wrapped with a Kindness mural design and that volunteer guides have been trained to lead the route.
Nyberg described booking logistics: interested people will text a number with the words “golf cart,” and a staff member will follow up with available times. Tours are scheduled with different volunteer guides on different days; Nyberg said one guide will serve Monday and Friday, with others on other days. She said carts comfortably carry three passengers plus the driver, though the program may expand to additional carts in the future.
Nyberg said brochures showing the public-art stops are available and will be updated to reflect the recent relocation of the “Ties That Bind” sculpture. She described the tours as a way to raise awareness of the city’s public art, to deepen public engagement and to support local tourism. The Arts Alliance is a nonprofit; Nyberg said donations and tips to guides are appreciated in addition to the tour fee.
Commissioners asked practical questions, including whether river-boat visitors might use the tours and the cart capacity. Nyberg said the tour start point is adjacent to the Kindness Mural and within walking distance of docked river boats, allowing coordination if visitors choose to book a tour.
