Wyatt Weir, a Germantown resident, apologized during the meeting for earlier criticism of the village fire station after taking a tour arranged by the chief. Weir described small sleeping quarters and insufficient bathroom and shower facilities for a full-time department and urged trustees to address space and facility issues.
“I toured the so-called 11 beds in a kitchen. Those bedrooms were smaller than my kids’ college dorm. You can't get two people in there,” Weir said, adding that the building appears sound from the outside but needs interior work including windows and expanded facilities. He publicly apologized for comments he made at an earlier meeting before seeing the station in person.
The board noted the fire department will host an open house at Fire Station 2 on Lisonbee Drive during National Fire Safety Week, Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and invited residents to view the station and its condition. The village received one written question asking how long a remodel might last before the department requests a new station and whether the department would conduct ongoing inspections after upgrades. The board did not take action on the questions during the public-comment period.
No formal agenda action or vote was taken on the station condition at the meeting. The fire chief presented the department’s new monthly report and answered trustees’ questions about call geography and overtime; trustees requested additional time to review the new report format.
