Commissioners said they will contact Hatcher to ask whether she can attend remotely and explore alternative meeting times, including an earlier lunch-hour start or an earlier afternoon time. Commissioners said the commission is required to meet monthly under the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and noted the Zoom option is now available.
Why it matters: commissioners said the current schedule risks excluding a member with a new work schedule and could affect quorum and participation. The commission’s ability to hold business remotely and to set a time when most members can attend will determine whether meetings remain in person or shift to Zoom for some sessions.
During the discussion commissioners traded options: keeping the Thursday slot, moving to an earlier time on Thursdays, or shifting to a different day. Members noted that other local commissions often meet at 4 p.m. or 6 p.m., and that a lunch-hour meeting might allow remote participation by Hatcher. One commissioner said the current start time had been chosen to align with police department availability when the schedule was first set.
No formal change was adopted at the meeting. The presiding officer said they would contact Commissioner Maria Hatcher to discuss her availability and follow up with other members before scheduling any change.
The commission did not set a new regular time at the Aug. 14 meeting; members indicated changes would be scheduled only after consulting Hatcher and confirming what accommodates the most members.
