County facilities updates: sanding, sidewalks, damaged column, generator timing and recycling staffing

Public works staff gave a series of facilities updates covering interior finishing, sidewalk and courthouse-side repairs, a damaged front column at the administration building, a generator delivery schedule and a recycling staffing shortfall.
Cliff, a public works staff member, said downstairs sanding and finishing work was underway and that the Chamber of Commerce covered much of the material costs: “We've done quite a bit of the labor, but Chamber of Commerce has footed quite a bit of that money,” he said. Cliff also described sidewalk work along West Main and replacement of damaged sidewalk at the side of the courthouse.
The committee discussed damage to one of the front columns on the administration building. Cliff said the columns are not structural and that beams and roof pitch carry the load: “The 2 outer ones will more than hold the the weight of it. It's got beams in it, and, the way that the roof's pitched, it basically holds itself up.” A committee member said an individual visiting the building took out one column in an accident and noted there are now three columns across the front. The committee did not reach a decision at the meeting about whether to replace the damaged column or remove the middle column and leave only corner columns; one member asked whether the motorist was insured, but the transcript records no answer.
Members discussed the county’s backup-generator project. A committee member said Mr. Mink indicated the generator should be delivered in November and that work on the pad would begin so the installation could proceed before year end, weather permitting: “He was under the impression that they should be delivering the, the generator in November,” the member said. There was no firm completion date recorded at the meeting; staff said work is ongoing on site preparations.
On recycling, Cliff said the county lost the jailer-inmate arrangement that had been handling recycling collection and that public works moved the work in-house for now: “We've lost our recycling, inmate, jailer, the CO that was doing all of our recycling. So we've moved it over in house where the my local guys are doing it,” he said. Cliff said the present staff can manage temporarily but that when summer returns the crew may not be able to keep up and the county may need to hire additional help. He also said a jailer named Dana Kemp had completed coursework and needed a psychology test to finish certification.
No formal votes or binding decisions about the administration-building columns, generator schedule or recycling staffing were taken at this meeting; these items were recorded as updates and items for potential future action.
