Westbury UFSD officials explain professional learning community leader approvals

Trustees sought clarification Wednesday about resolution item 6(j), which the agenda lists as approvals for professional learning community (PLC) leaders at several district schools.
Superintendent Doctor Chase said all district school buildings have functional PLCs and that the agenda lists those buildings whose leaders had not yet been previously approved. Doctor Roger Bloom, who leads PLC efforts districtwide, explained that PLC leadership is a collaborative, building-based process: staff within a PLC come to consensus on a leader, and that leadership can change during the year "based on the collaborative process" and "could change every marking period or every semester."
Bloom told the board that at the September 16 board meeting leaders from Dryden, Drexel, Powell's Lane and the high school were approved; the Oct. 14 planning meeting primarily added approvals for Park and the middle school, giving representation across the district's six school buildings. Bloom said PLC teams set goals, analyze common formative assessments and may change leadership as needs and curriculum work evolve.
The board recorded the exchange as part of its review of resolution item 6(j); trustees did not take an additional, separate vote on PLC policy during the planning meeting.
