City liaison: Kalamazoo's city manager search drawing a strong applicant pool; public engagement planned in October

The Kalamazoo City Commission liaison updated the Planning Commission Sept. 4 on the city manager search, saying the position has been posted nationwide and the city has engaged the search firm Raftelis.
The liaison said the search drew an initial 14 applications in the first week and 20 applicants as of the most recent count on Tuesday. He said the city opened a community survey that received more than 400 responses and that two community-hosted input sessions were held; the liaison said all feedback and recordings will be posted to the city manager search page.
The liaison described the next public engagement steps: a meet-and-greet for finalists at the Catalyst Center on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and finalist interviews in a special City Commission meeting beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. He said the commission expects to make a final selection on Oct. 20. The liaison encouraged community participation via the posted materials and surveys.
When asked how many finalists the commission expects, the liaison said the typical range is three to five, but the final number will depend on candidate quality and search recommendations.
