Keep Dawson County Beautiful (KDCB) asked the Board of Commissioners for permission to apply for a matching relief grant to fund a fall tree giveaway that would distribute trees, mulch and educational materials to county residents.
The presentation was made by a KDCB representative (acting in place of the secretary, who was on vacation). The group proposed distributing approximately 197 native trees in 2.25-gallon pots and an equal number of 25-quart bags of mulch and potting mix to Dawson County residents, along with watering aids and printed planting-care materials to encourage residential tree planting and canopy expansion.
"The purpose is to distribute approximately a 197 trees that would be in 2 and a quarter gallon pots and a hundred and 97 25 quart bags of mulch and potting mix," the presenter said. She told the board the group did not have specific species details available at the time but described them as native trees.
The group requested permission to move the grant application forward because the deadline is July 31. A commissioner agreed to move the request forward.
Why it matters: The project promotes urban canopy expansion, residential engagement in sustainability and neighborhood beautification. If awarded, the grant would be matched by KDCB funds and used to provide free trees and planting support to residents.
The board directed staff to move the grant application forward for consideration at the upcoming voting session given the application deadline.
