Laredo library wins state accreditation; staff eyes new training requirements and e-rate benefits

The Laredo Library Advisory Board heard on Oct. 6 that the city’s library system has again met accreditation criteria from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, a recognition library staff said provides access to significant technology discounts and new training requirements.

Library staff told the board the accreditation letter confirms the system met the commission’s minimum standards and noted changes to the accreditation program that will require additional staff training. The staff member said the accreditation enables access to the federal E-rate discount program and that Laredo receives a 90% discount on eligible technology services.

Board members were shown a copy of the accreditation notification and were told the commission’s new standards will require more in-depth webinars and trainings for library staff beginning Oct. 28, with additional training planned in January. A library staff member said the trainings are intended to help the system maintain future accreditation and to preserve access to funding and discounts that the staff called essential to providing public internet access and public computers at library locations.

The presenter emphasized operational accreditation requirements that the board had already supported, including the library advisory committee, a friends group, a minimum books-per-capita metric and required documentation for services. The board discussed scheduling a fuller update after the initial trainings, and library staff offered to return to a subsequent meeting with more details once the trainings have begun.

Board members congratulated staff on the renewal and asked about next steps. The library staff member answered questions about the timeline for webinars and said staff will provide a fuller report after January training. No formal action was taken on this item.
