The Town of James Island approved a resolution to rename Pinkney Park as Simeon Pinckney Park, the council announced after a unanimous roll call vote.

Mayor Bridal Lyon and council members said the change was requested by descendants and local historians to honor Simeon Pinckney specifically and to distinguish him from other Pinkney family members. The council noted letters and support from family members and local historians were submitted in favor of the renaming.

The town’s history committee is coordinating a replica of Pinckney’s stone and a public celebration scheduled for Nov. 15, with ceremony plans and a reception to follow. Council members said a replica marker will be delivered in advance and unveiled at the celebration.

The resolution passed unanimously by roll call. Town staff will update signage and records accordingly.
