Clovis honors landfill superintendent, proclaims Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Bank of Clovis Day

The Clovis City Commission on Oct. 16 recognized Oscar Macias for nearly 25 years of service as landfill superintendent, issued a proclamation supporting the fifth annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s and declared Oct. 17, 2025 Bank of Clovis Day.
Landfill Superintendent Oscar Macias received comments from Public Works Director Clint Bunch, who praised Macias’s ‘‘work ethic’’ and hands-on approach and said Macias ‘‘has exceeded my expectations.’’ Macias told the commission the job began as ‘‘just a job’’ but evolved into ‘‘a career’’ and thanked colleagues and city officials for the opportunity.
Christian Price, representing Curry County in partnership with the cities of Clovis and Portales and Roosevelt County, presented a proclamation for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, scheduled for Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at the North Plains Mall. Price said the event raises money and awareness and honors ‘‘those that have passed, those who are still fighting, and those who have yet to fight.’’ The proclamation cited state health data included in the presentation: approximately 53,000 New Mexicans currently live with Alzheimer’s and dementia; New Mexico is projected to need a 94.9% increase in geriatricians by 2050.
The commission also recognized the Bank of Clovis on its 25th anniversary. Chris Thomas, president of the Bank of Clovis, described the institution as a community-focused bank and presented tokens of appreciation. Mayor Mike Morris read a proclamation into the record declaring Oct. 17, 2025, as Bank of Clovis Day in Clovis and summarized the bank’s history and growth figures provided in the proclamation, including reported asset milestones and branch expansions.
Commissioners and several members of the public offered brief congratulations to Macias and to the bank. No formal votes were required for the recognitions and proclamations; the proclamations were read for the record and entered into the minutes.
The acknowledgments wrap several community-focused items on the commission’s agenda: an employee retirement, a community fundraising event for Alzheimer’s awareness, and a local-bank anniversary that the proclamation said supports schools and small businesses across eastern New Mexico.
